We are a small hobby breeder located in the heart of Central Illinois. Our goal here at De Novo Cane Corso is to produce sound, functional dogs focusing on temperament and health.
Here at De Novo, we strive to breed dogs to the AKC standard; therefore, we do not focus on fad colors, oversized dogs, or popularity, but truly to preserve this ancient breed. We health test every dog prior to breeding using OFA (Orthopedic Foundation of America), PennHIP, as well as genetic testing done through VetGen.
All of our dogs are a part of our family and our pets first and foremost. Every puppy is born in the nursery right off our living room and is carefully supervised by myself and my daughter Brookelyn from day one. They are handled daily and are loved by the entire family. We incorporate the ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) and Puppy Culture Program with all of our litters from day 3 on. Around 3-4 weeks, we introduce a “potty box” and a separate area for feeding and play. When outside, we have a puppy play yard set up which allows them free play with many different materials. There is a puppy activity cube with hanging objects that swing and make noise, as well as tunnels and foam blocks to climb into, through, and under. We also incorporate slides and platforms, a ball pit, and in the warmer months, they have a small water-filled pool. We try to pack as much experience as we can into the 8 weeks they are here with us. This includes walking on multiple different textures, different noises, and new sights. We introduce them to riding in a car, being in a crate, and eating inside and outside. This allows for proper enrichment, exposure, and socialization, giving them the confidence they need for a successful life within their future family.
The name Cane Corso (pronounced kah-ney kors-oh) can be broken down to its original language; Cane in Italian means dog, a derivative of the Latin canis. Also in Latin Cohors- this would mean bodyguard or guardian.
